Greg studied Metallurgical Engineering at Wits University and then spent two years doing National Service - the first year in Kroonstad, and the second employed professionally at Mintek in Randburg. He holds a BSc(Eng) degree in physical metallurgy and a postgraduate diploma (GDE) in mechanical engineering, also from Wits. He spent two years fulfilling his bursary obligations at Randfontein Estates Gold Mine and then moved to a foundry on the East Rand. After that, he moved to Afrox ending up as Operations Standards Manager. During his time at Afrox Head Office, he was fortunate to be involved in a global team tasked with the implementation of a comprehensive computerised standards and training system for the British Oxygen Company's (BOC) Gases Division, which took him to places in the UK, USA, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan. He then moved to Chemdes Technologies and after two years joined with some of his colleagues and bought the company from the previous owners. The company is now known as Distillation Solutions (Pty) Ltd, with the core business being the design and manufacture of distillation trays (and associated ancillaries) for the chemical and petrochemical industries.
Greg is married to Sandra (GHS Class of 1978), and they have two daughters. Helen is in Grade 11 (2006) and Julia is in Grade 5, both at St Dominic's. Greg's interests include fly fishing, bird-watching, 4X4 trails and camping, game viewing, reading, music, and eating out.
