Rodney Jones's Internet List
Some useful and interesting sites on the Internet (a work in progress), as
well as a list of sites related to mining and materials science.
Some sites are daily favourites, others look potentially interesting, and
are waiting to be explored. Some are probably already quite out of date.

Thermodynamics Research Laboratory
Thermodex - An Index of Selected Thermodynamic Data Handbooks--University of Texas
The Mallet Chemistry Library at the University of Texas provides this recently updated site, a no-nonsense
search interface to bibliographic information about 129 "printed handbooks and compilations of
thermodynamic and thermophysical data for chemical compounds." Users simply enter the properties and
compounds they are interested in and a list of sources that are relevant to the query is returned. Each
source contains brief bibliographic information, along with an abstract.

Report on Forum 2000: Fluid Properties for New Technologies -- Connecting Virtual Design with Physical Reality [.pdf]
In June 2000, the Fourteenth Symposium on Thermophysical Properties
was held to review the progress of thermophysics over the last 100 years
and to look forward to the next century of research and development in
thermophysics. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
provides a special publication online covering the event and including
overviews of topical issues from professionals in the field and several
brief, invited essays on issues raised in the forum by panelists,
audience participants, and other experts in thermophysics. The topics
addressed in the 113-page .pdf document include molecular modeling,
nuclear waste cleanup, power plants, process and chemical manufacturing,
data evaluation, simulations and sensitivity analysis, among others.

National Geographic Society
This site, updated daily, provides highlights from the Society's three
print magazines: National Geographic, World, and
Traveler. Also included: the Map Machine, which provides political
and physical maps of the world; Flashback, which allows the viewer to see
photographs and maps from the NGS archives; and Gold Mine, an archive of
questions and answers from NGS members and others. Users may also send a
virtual postcard with an NGS photograph to anyone with an email address.
The site's search engine is not yet implemented, but there is the NGS
Publication Index, which includes listings for National Geographic
magazines, books, and videos. Registration, free of charge, is offered but
not required to view the site.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORES MAP TERRITORY
From the people who bring you exciting new views of the world in print and
on TV comes a map resource so nationally geographic, you can practically
hear the theme music in the background. Go ahead, hum a few bars. Anyway,
if you're looking for maps of the world, this is the place to go. Click on
the continent, country, or region of your choice, and you'll get a good
dose of visual and textual information. A nifty Shockwave-operable
political map is also available.

FROM THE LOST TRIBES TO ALICE LOST
This beautiful site draws on surprising sources offered in unexpected juxtaposition. Maxima New
Media refashions traditional visual and literary material for presentation in the computer medium,
and they use this Web site to proudly display their work. Not the least of the site's pleasures is
Maxima's eclectic selection of sources: legends of the lost tribes of Israel; nonsense illustrations and
poetry by Edward Lear; whimsy from Lewis Carroll; a history told in Jewish folklore. Colors are
rich and warm. Animation is restrained and just right for the image. Line drawings are witty, and
even the link icons are minor masterpieces. Contests engage visitors even more and there's free clip
art.

Patent Searching from IBM and
Optipat
USPTO and CNIDR Patents Database
IBM and Optipat, Inc. have made a searchable US Patent Database available
on the web. Coverage is from 1971 to the end of 1996 at present (IBM
intends to update it regularly), and retrieval includes bibliographic
information about the patent, claims, reference, and abstract information.
In addition, for patents since 1987, images of the patent are available.
IBM intends to add images from 1974-86 patents early in 1997. Users can
view the images, or order the patents online from Optipat. Patent number
searching, as well as Boolean and field searching are provided. The
provision of claims and detailed drawing image information distinguishes
this site from the Patent and Trademark Office/CNIDR (Center For Networked
Information Discovery and Retrieval) patent search site. Of course, as
might be expected, both retrieval and relevance rankings of these two
search engines differ, so patent searchers may want to use them in
combination.
IBM Intellectual Property Network
Users can search, retrieve, and view nearly four million patents
and applications at this site from IBM. The Intellectual Property
Network offers access to US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) patent
descriptions from 1971 to the present, as well as "over 1.4 million
European Patent Office and World Intellectual Property Office patents
and applications." In addition, the site also contains "images of
nearly all the US patents over the last 24 years and the images of
the EPA and WIPO documents." Users can search each patent collection
by keyword, patent number, Boolean text, or advanced text. Print and
CD-ROM copies of patents may be ordered for a fee. Additional
resources include What's New and FAQ pages and a Gallery of Obscure
Patents.
All United States Patents since 1971 are online, courtesy of IBM (no slouch
in the patent securing field, by the way). Using a familiar search engine
interface, you can search by a number of fields including: inventor,
assignee, title, abstract, claims, and agent. You can access over 27 years
of US Patent and Trademark Office patent descriptions as well as the last
24 years of patent images. In all, it amounts to over two million patents.
<http://patent.womplex.ibm.com/>
USPTO Patents Database from Elsevier
Search the free US Patents Full-Text Database from January 1996 to
the present. Data from over 850,000 patents is text searchable by
patent title, inventor name and assignee name.
Bible Browser--University of Chicago
The Bible Browser, provided by Richard Goerwitz of the University of
Chicago, is a powerful search tool that lets you search passages, words,
or word parts of any of three (in basic mode) or eight (in advanced mode)
bibles. Each mode will search a Latin as well as English bibles. Phrase
and Boolean searching is supported. Exhaustive help files are provided for
basic, advanced, and pBible (direct queries to the search retrieval daemon
that underlies the entire searching system) searching. One of the
highlights of this site is that it allows you to see selected passages in
multiple bibles, set up as table output. The Bible Browser is supported by
the Afroasiatic Index Project and the Oriental Institute of the University
of Chicago.

OCLC SiteSearch WebZ -- an evaluation system at the University of Missouri
The University of Missouri has
made the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) SiteSearch WebZ evaluation
system available on the Web. Searchable databases include Current
Contents, Expanded Academic Index, Legal Resource Index, and Business
Index. Searching can be done on title keyword, author phrase, subject
keyword, or journal title phrase. Boolean searching and powerful proximity
searching are available. Inverted indexes of each searchable field
dictionary are also available. The help files are crucial to exploiting
the power of the searching system, as they explain basic searching,
broadening and refining searches, and the indexes available for searching
in each database. Using the indexes allows searchers to construct much
more powerful searches. All help files are located under "Help" on any
search page. For additional information about the databases, click on
"Descriptions of the databases and what they contain" after you begin
searching. Note that the University of Missouri specifically states that
this an "initial implementation," which means that it is a beta offering.
However, the quality of the databases, as well as the power of the
searching system, make this site worth a visit.

Education Place--Houghton Mifflin
For teachers looking for new ideas, for parents trying to rescue children
from summer boredom, and for kids who would like to try some new activities
(and learn something along the way) Houghton Mifflin offers the Education
Place. This web site includes a Math Center, a Reading/Language Arts
Center, and a Social Studies Center. Each Center has activities, links to
related web resources, suggestions for reading, and resources for teachers.
Throughout the site are ideas for parents and kids, as well as resources
that specifically instruct teachers on how to enrich their curricula.

Kidsource Online
Kidsource Online is an extensive collection of information about raising
children from newborns to adolescents. A sampling of the publications
they've pulled together at the site includes "Children and Bilingualism"
from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; "Testing Your
Child's Hearing" by Carol Knightly, Pediatric Audiologist; and the
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) Provides Tips to Help
Parents and Kids Cope with Allergy Season. Resources are organized under
top-level categories of Newborns, Toddlers, Preschoolers, K-12,
Education, Health, Recreation, Forums, Organizations, and Guide to Best
Software, among others.

Berit's Best Sites for Children
http://www.cochran.com/theosite/KSites.html
If you want to introduce your young child to some of the better Internet
sites for children, Berit's Best Sites for Children is the place to start.
Provided by Berit Erickson for Cochran Interactive, this site offers over
400 briefly annotated and rated sites in the subjects of "Just for Fun,"
"Kids on the Net," and "Serious Stuff." There are pointers to museums,
elementary schools, "creepy crawlies," pen pals, stories, and other
attractions. Ratings (on a 5 point scale) are based on appearance, content,
ease of use, organization, relevance, and suitability for children.
The Space Place
http://spaceplace.jpl.nasa.gov/spacepl.htm
The Space Place demonstrates and explains scientific concepts related to astronomy in a fun, hands-on manner that is
tailored to grade school children. Sponsored by NASA, the California Institute of Technology, and a consortium of other
technology partners, The Space Place offers a simple, clutter-free forum where children can learn about such topics as
stars, the earth, ions, and interferometry by baking cookies, navigating a maze, and solving a riddle. The explanations that
follow the activities are clea and concise enough for even adults to understand.

HTMLGoodies
This site, provided by Joe Burns, contains a veritable gold mine of HTML-related tutorials for both beginning and
advanced web developers. The site is highlighted by HTML tutorials, which include basics, Java, Javascript, CGI, tables,
forms, frames, and image maps, among many others. For the beginner, there is a seven step HTML tutorial. The site also
contains over 450 submitted Javascripts, and a library of free images. Language used to teach concepts is breezy and
lighthearted; still, the content is infomative and well thought out.
C|Net's Get Animated -- Create an Animated GIF in 7 easy steps
http://cnet.com/Content/Features/Howto/Webanim/?builder
GIF animation resources:
http://cnet.com/Content/Features/Howto/Webanim/ss04.html
GIFmation:
http://enlil.boxtopsoft.com/GIFmation/
Cecilia Farell, a Web designer and freelance writer based in Toronto, has put
together a great online tutorial/informational resource for c|net on "how to
make your GIFs dance" in as few as 7 simple steps. All the tools necessary to
animate as well as additional resources are provided at the site. The tutorial
is open to those with Windows 3.x/95/NT, Macintosh, or UNIX, but it is
specific to GIF Construction Set, one of the animation tools listed for
Windows 95/NT. If you choose another tool much of the tutorial may not apply
to you, but it still offers some general information on animation from which
anyone can benefit. The Internet Scout Project used the 90 day evaluation
version of GIFmation, a $49 product of BoxTop Software, Inc. Working with this
tool was very easy: import the images, press play, and voila, you have your
first animation. Saving the animation was also as easy as using the "Export
Optimized ..." feature (note: the demo version will not save GIFs with more
than 3 frames). If the GIF doesn't appear to be animated when viewed in your
browser, go back to GIFmation, increase the amount of loops, and re-save it.
Since the default play time is very fast, it probably completed its loop
before it was visible in the browser. The documentation, which must be
downloaded separately, is also quite helpful. Another nice feature is that
animations created with this or any of the tools listed on the resource page
of Get Animated do not require a browser plug-in. The tutorial ends with some
useful advice on animation, tools, and resources, so be sure to check them out
as well.
