After leaving school, Ian worked for a short period as a bank clerk, then
went to work on the mines. He studied at Wits Technikon and qualified as
an assayer, and also studied extractive metallurgy. Ian works in the field
of refining precious metals for the jewellery industry, and has had his own
business, Perkins Metals, for the past 17 years.
Ian now lives in the Algarve in Portugal (since about five years ago), but visits South Africa about
once a year, as he still has business interests in Johannesburg.
